THE JOURNEY TO HOVD P art of the 450-km journey to Hovd proved to be a special test for us and for our vehicles. Riding on uneven terrain similar to bumpy roof tiles was strenuous for all the joints and connections in the motorcycles. And the rocky terrain next to the road didn’t offer any possibilities for an easierride, either. After this exhausting stretch of road, we stopped in the desert for a bite to eat. No matter in which direction you looked, all you saw was the sky and desert blending at the horizon. We opened some canned food and ate while standing. A familiar scent got me looking around. Unbelievable! Onions! Thin blades of onion were poking out of the sand. I pulled one out and tried it. A sea of onions in the desert! Cool! This was going to make for a great side dish with our tuna. "There weren’t many nails in these regions, but I had managed to find one."
