2) The Fosse Way
This road traces what was initially the border
between Romano-Britain and the
unconquered barbarians, but was later turned
by the Roman army into a road stretching
from Lincoln 230 miles south-west to the
Dorset coast. These days, parts of it have been
incorporated into the modern main road
network, other bits are quiet country lanes,
and the part crossing South Gloucestershire
into Wiltshire is mostly unmetalled Byway
Open to All Traffic.
It makes an ideal Summer route for an
adventure bike…start off in the city of Lincoln
(with a historic prison, cathedral and castle to
look around), stop in Leicester where you can
sample authentic Asian food and culture to
give your trip a hint of ‘round the world travel’
then move down through the Cotswolds to
Bath (another historic town, with more tourist
attractions and posh totty than you could
shake a stick at) before finishing in the
seaside resort of Weymouth on Dorset’s
‘Jurassic’ coast, where there’s enough
spectacular geology around to make you want
to take an A level in the subject. You can
round the trip off by visiting the Tank Museum
nearby at Bovington, where you can see some
of the world’s first tanks, which were built
in…Lincoln!
