GERMANY

Finally we ’ re in Germany and the scenery changes , with mountains that mark the start of the Black Forest rearing up in the distance . We spend the last few miles of the day sweeping around the beginnings of some fine roads until the Pension Williams finally moves in to a very welcome view and we come to rest . We trot down to the village and dine on pork and beer in the setting sun before hitting the hay , dreaming of roads to come .

Friday dawns bright , we saddle up and head for the legendary B500 and beyond … it ’ s off to a promising start with wide sweeping curves , uphill and down dale , twisting through the forest like an uncoiled fire hose . Onwards we rollercoaster , through medieval towns bedecked with flags , cobbles thrumming beneath the wheels , we stop to enjoy a coffee and take a breather , reflecting on the brilliant roads we ’ d just ridden .
The Black Forest peters out as we head South East , turning to hills as it prepares to become the more serious Alps in the far distance . A brief stint on the autobahn is interrupted by closure , and so begins 2 hours of nose to tail traffic in the baking midday sun . We take refuge in a lakeside resort to lunch on the quayside of Lake Bodensee with the grockles . A travelling Italian market is in town , filling the air with the mouth-watering scents of all sorts of delicious hams and cheeses . Especially “ Mountain Gorgonzola ” which needs trapping and nailing in a locked box , to restrain it from overpowering and eating the more defenceless cheeses and grazing on the ham . Powerful stuff , but we lack the packing space to take some and don ’ t have enough security for the gorgonzola … so we settle for some pasta and shade .
Sated by lunch , we sighed and struggled on with the traffic , splitting lanes and swooping up the outside for 40 of so more miles , until finally the torture ends and the Alps loom with large majestic might and fill our visors . Innsbruck appears on the signs for the first time , but with some alarmingly large numbers to describe the distance next to it !
