o, what are proper boots?
The best boots are undoubtedly pukka
motocross types with treaded soles (some MX
boots have ‘slipper’ soles). They feel quite
clumsy to the uninitiated and you may have to
adjust your rear brake and gearchange controls,
as well as getting used to getting far less
feedback through the pedals.
But the sacrifice is worth it in terms of the extra
protection offered: not just against falls, but
also in terms of trail debris and potential shin-
barking impacts with your own footrests.
There is a wide range of trousers and jackets
available to suit the adventure rider: some at
eye-watering prices. The best (not necessarily
the most expensive) designs will feature plenty
of adjustable ventilation, and be easily
washable. Guarantees of absolute
waterproofness need to be treated with
caution…all jackets have a large neck hole at
the top that tends to let water in eventually.
Many riders happily use ex-forces Goretex kit,
which does a reasonable job at an affordable
price.
