A lthough legally highways, most of these routes do not have the ‘benefit’ of tarmac…which actually makes them more fun to ride, providing you’ve got a suitable bike. And the term ‘suitable’ covers a very broad spectrum: from something old and British, through an affordable Japanese trail bike from the 1990s right up to a massive BMW Adventure. Whatever you ride has to be street-legal, because the rights of way that we can use are all legally public roads. Another point to remember is that, no matter how good a rider you are, at some point the bike is likely to end up on its side. Practice lowering it to the ground and picking it up again.
