T
he next few days
was spent with Brian Rix and
Shirley Hardy-Rix whom I had met
at the Horizons Unlimited
meeting the year before. Shirley’s
book Two for the Road, about
their overland journey through
Europe and Asia, had been one of
the first audio-books I had ever
listened to, and her enthralling
description of riding the TT track
on the Isle of Mann had stayed
with me for many years. They had
recently released a second book
Circle to Circle about their bike
trip from the bottom to the top of
the Americas and beyond. After
eighty thousand kilometres their
BMW had given up the ghost
halfway across the Nullarbor on
the last leg to home. My oft stated
reason for choosing a Postie Bike
to go “Round the Block” was
because anybody could do it on a
1000cc BMW – but it seems not.
[And I should not boast too loudly
lest fate steps in]
Heading west along the Great
Ocean Road, Mo was once again
in his element. Cruising slowly
with time to stop and take photos
of letterboxes, we were not fazed
by the 60k/h speed limit, in fact it
seemed to be something to aspire
to. Mo doesn’t exactly tip into
corners – rather he tip-toes
around them and elegant is not a
word to be used in the same
sentence as Postie Bike. However
there is still a grin-factor to be
had – difficult to explain – but it
requires a complete shift in
attitude towards riding and the
definition of adventure.
