MEM - Wonderful Roads and Places
Welcome to the Transfagarasan Highway in Romania!
Now the rather less exciting name is the DN7C but it is important to
know as you will see from the interactive map that there is a route 7D on
the route from south to north. We suggest that the north to south route
will offer much better views as you come up and over the mighty
Carpathian mountains!
Around 40km east of Sibiu the Highway cuts off the road to Brasov and
speeds you directly towards the Fagaras Mountain range where the
highway name comes from. The highway is open only a few months a
year due to snowfall and tends to be closed from late October to late
June. You can get the weather report from the interaction weather logo
here in the article.
It runs for around 90km between Sibiu to Pitesti both have a lot to offer
for the discerning rider and their camera. Having a wealth of
monuments, old churches and museums for you to visit and you can
check those out on the Romanian Tourism site by just clicking the logo.
The highway was built in the 1970s and it’s reported that it took over 6
million kilo of dynamite to get through the rocks – this was done by the
military and many of them untrained. Not surprisingly there was a
serious death toll and the official stats are 40 soldiers who lost their
lives making this highway!
