Sarus Crane Reintroduction Project Thailand and Ban Sawai So Tourism Village
Wetland and Eastern Sarus Crane Learning Center
Located near the Huai Chorakhe Mak Reservoir in Sakae Phrong Sub-district, this center stands as a global milestone in wildlife conservation. It marks the successful reintroduction of the Eastern Sarus Crane to the wild after it had been extinct from its natural habitat for over 50 years, showcasing a sustainable coexistence between humans and wildlife. Since 2011, the project has successfully released 180 cranes into the wild, resulting in 185 natural-born chicks through community-led conservation and local wisdom. The center serves as a vital hub for monitoring and studying rare flora and fauna, while simultaneously promoting ecotourism and creating economic opportunities for the region.
Community Based Tourism Ban Swai So Integral to the survival of the cranes is the Ban Swai So community, an OTOP Innovative Way Village dedicated to organic rice farming. Visitors can enjoy the unique " Thiang Na Chef Table "( Rice Field Chef’ s Table) experience, where local cooks prepare authentic dishes using organic ingredients served amidst the scenic rice fields. Guests can also explore the village ' s identity through " Pha Guay," a traditional deep blue woven cloth featuring vibrant stripes that tell the story of local heritage. Other engaging activities include reed mat weaving, organic vegetable cultivation in domes, and traditional folk art performances.
