After three years in the Red Bull Rookies programme , Binder spent several seasons on Mahindra machinery from 2012 to 2014 in the Moto3™ class before a move to Aki Ajo ’ s KTM team in 2015 . After a year of learning the ropes with Aki , Binder romped to the title in 2016 . A left arm fracture in preseason testing complicated his Moto2™ debut in 2017 but he sped to three Moto2™ victories the following year , and showed amazing determination to win five races and finish second overall in 2019 despite subpar equipment . Binder was an assured MotoGP™ presence in 2020 , earning the Rookie of the Year title and winning his third ever premier class race . He earned another in 2021 and finished sixth overall . The South African was KTM ’ s leading light in the first half of 2022 .
