Figlio dell ’ ex pilota della 250cc Helmut , debutta nel 2006 in 125cc . Due anni dopo vince due gare e arriva quarto in classifica . Nel 2010 passa in Moto2™ e nel 2011 grazie a quattro successi si laurea campione del mondo battendo Marc Marquez . Conquista così un posto nel team LCR Honda in MotoGP™ dove scende in pista tra il 2012 e il 2014 portando a casa un podio . Approda poi nel team Forward Yamaha , in Aprilia e in Honda nel WorldSBK prima di tornare in HRC per diventare collaudatore ufficiale nel 2019 . Al momento sostituisce l ’ infortunato Marc Marquez nel team Repsol Honda .

Son of former 250cc rider Helmut , Stefan ’ s first appearance came way back in 2006 in the 125cc class . His big break arrived two years later , when he placed fourth overall and won two races . A move up to Moto2™ in 2010 saw him perfectly placed to begin a victorious assault on the championship in 2011 , a year when he won four races and overcame an epic Marc Marquez charge . The German ’ s reward was a seat in the LCR Honda team in MotoGP™ , where he rode for three seasons between 2012 and 2014 , with just one podium finish coming in that time . Stints at Forward Yamaha , Aprilia and then Honda in WorldSBK followed before Stefan returned to HRC to become the factory ’ s test rider in 2019 . From then he has provided cover for injured riders and is currently deputising for Marc Marquez in the Repsol Honda team .
