The first half of Quartararo ’ s 2023 was miserable ; the second promising as he first learned to accept the Yamaha M1 ’ s shortcomings , and then rode beyond them . Qualifying was an issue last year , and could well be the factory ’ s undoing in 2024 . There ’ s no doubt the M1 – a bike which hasn ’ t won a race since June , 2022 – is still some way off it . But the 2021 Champ ’ s aims are more realistic this year , knowing he can build from a solid base of early top six results . He ’ s been a calmer figure this year , and is still capable of fighting with the best in class when the bike allows him to , even if Yamaha are some way off currently .
De eerste helft van Quartararo ’ s 2023-seizoen was ellendig ; de tweede helft veelbelovend , toen hij eerst leerde de tekortkomingen van de Yamaha M1 te accepteren en vervolgens daarbovenuit te stijgen . Kwalificeren was vorig jaar een uitdagen . En dat zou heel goed ook in 2024 een probleem voor het team kunnen betekenen . Er is geen twijfel dat de M1 – een motor die sinds juni 2022 geen race meer heeft gewonnen – nog steeds niet op het gewenste niveau is . Maar de doelen van de kampioen van 2021 zijn dit jaar realistischer , omdat hij weet dat hij kan bouwen op een solide basis van vroege top zes resultaten . Hij is dit jaar kalmer en is nog steeds in staat om de strijd aan te gaan met de besten in zijn klasse wanneer de motor hem dat toelaat .
