Sulla scia delle entusiasmanti prestazioni nel campionato europeo Superstock 600 , l ’ italiano ha esordito nella classe intermedia nel 2014 e due anni dopo è passato al team Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS Moto2™ , con il quale ha vinto il titolo nel 2017 . Il passaggio in top class è stato condizionato da una Honda RC213V sottodimensionata e seguito dall ’ ingresso nell ’ orbita Yamaha con il Sepang Racing Team nel 2019 : per lui , quella stagione , sette piazzamenti nei primi sei e quattro partenze in prima fila . Su queste basi , nel 2020 , due pole , tre vittorie e il titolo di vicecampione del mondo nella premier class in sella a una Yamaha dell ’ anno precedente . Il 2021 è stato rovinato da un grave infortunio al ginocchio che gli ha fatto saltare cinque gare . Dal rientro non è mai stato lo stesso , almeno nella stagione scorsa . Affronta il 2022 con i colori Yamaha ufficiali : tornerà alla forma del 2020 ?

Off the back of exciting performances in the European Superstock 600cc Championship , the laconic Roman joined Moto2™ in 2014 . 2015 showed definite promise and a switch to Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS Moto2™ team for 2016 led to him winning the title in 2017 . His move to MotoGP™ with Marc VDS was undermined by an underpowered Honda RC213V . But a switch to the Petronas-backed Sepang Racing Team for 2019 brought about seven top six finishes and four front row starts . He built on that , claiming two poles , three wins and second in the championship in 2020 on a year-old bike . 2021 was plagued by a serious knee injury , which caused him to miss five races . He was never quite the same rider upon his return . But Morbidelli is fully fit for the start of 2022 . And he has the latest Yamaha in the factory team . Can he reproduce his 2020 form ?
