MotoE™ WORLD CUP 2021
For the third season in succession , the MotoE™ World Cup has turned the doubters into believers . As it did in its first two seasons in 2019 and 2020 , the one-make class produced exciting racing , unquestionable drama and a title fight that went all the way to the wire . With 18 entrants competing aboard identical Energica Ego Corse machines capable of 165mph and super sticky Michelin MotoGP™spec tyres , the formula for close racing was complete . In five out of the seven races witnessed this year , the victory fight went right the way to the wire . There was variety to boot , with six different race winners and eight podium finishers . And as many as eleven riders went to the final round in Misano with mathematical hopes of claiming the overall world crown .
Now in its third season , the MotoE™ World Cup is back for with an expanded series being held over seven races and six rounds running from May to September . Grand Prix winners Dominique Aegerter and Jordi Torres fought it out for the crown in dramatic style until the final lap of the final race of the World Cup . 18 riders representing 10 countries battled it out this season , including 2020 Cup winner Torres ( HP Pons 40 ), who retained his World Cup Crown in the most dramatic of circumstances . The final double-header at Misano delivered on all fronts . Four riders – Alessandro Zaccone ( Octo Pramac MotoE ), Eric Granado ( One Energy Racing ), Torres and Aegerter ( Dynavolt Intact GP ) – arrived in Italy separated by just eleven points . What ’ s more , the quartet occupied four of the top five positions on the grid .
There was heartbreak for two names in race one . First Zaccone crashed out just three turns in and was runover by another rider . Thankfully , the Italian avoided serious injury but was forced to sit out race two due to suffering three fractures , bringing such a promising season to a disappointing end . Second , Granado crashed out at the race ’ s final corner when attempting a last-gasp pass for the lead . The fight was then narrowed down to two . Granado ’ s late attempted pass on Aegerter allowed Torres through for victory , meaning the Spaniard carried an eight-point advantage into the final race . Still , Torres fought for victory and led from the front . After a slow start , Aegerter closed in , setting up a sensational late showdown . The lead changed hands on eight occasions before the defining moment – and image – of the World Cup . Aegerter ’ s late pass at turn 14 pushed both men wide , with Torres crashing out in the process .
The Swiss rider ’ s celebrations were soon curtailed as he was handed a 38-second penalty – the equivalent of a ride-through penalty – which meant Torres , who remounted to finish 13th was champion for the second straight year . MotoE™ had never seen anything as dramatic . The year wasn ’ t only about that quartet . 2019 winner and 2020 runner-up Matteo Ferrari ( Indonesian E-Racing Gresini MotoE ) won the final race , enough to elevate him to third overall . Mattia Casadei ( Ongetta SIC58 Squadracorse ) made a heroic return to Jerez after a sustaining a serious leg injury over the offseason and racked up three podiums to finish sixth overall . And there were also victories for the likes of Lukas Tulovic ( Tech3 E-Racing ) in Austria and Miquel Pons ( LCR E-Team ) in Barcelona , making this the most varied and exciting MotoE™ World Cup to date .
