Since Marc Marquez left Honda at the end of 2023, a shift in mentality has been required at Honda HRC, with 2024 being a challenging year and the manufacturer looking to the future. Like fellow Japanese manufacturer Yamaha, they’ ve been overthrown from their chair at the top in recent years by the return to force of the European manufacturers but that doesn’ t mean Honda HRC are down and out completely. 2020 World Champion Joan Mir, Luca Marini, Johann Zarco and Thailand’ s Somkiat Chantra will work intensely to deliver results, of which their best in 2024 was a P8 by Zarco at Buriram. But work is being undertaken behind the scenes; Honda have poached ex-Aprilia technical director Romano Albesiano, who was part of the Noale brand in that role since 2013, replacing Gigi Dall’ Igna who moved to Ducati. This time, Albesiano replaces Ken Kawauchi, who moves to the test team, which also has a new face. Takaaki Nakagami remains in the Honda ecosystem and is joined by ex-GP winner Aleix Espargaro. Having two ex-Aprilia personnel in Espargaro and Albesiano may be just a small part of what is needed to turn the Honda HRC ship around. The year started brilliantly, with Zarco taking a famous win in France and podium in England. But development stalled before the summer break. Their riders are hopeful of updates arriving soon to help them kick on in the coming months.

Wie der japanische Hersteller Yamaha wurde Honda HRC in den letzten Jahren durch die Rückkehr der europäischen Hersteller von der Spitze verdrängt. Das heißt aber nicht, dass Honda HRC aufgegeben hat. Joan Mir, Weltmeister von 2020, Luca Marini, Johann Zarco und der Thailänder Somkiat Chantra arbeiten intensiv daran, Ergebnisse zu erzielen. Ihr bestes Ergebnis im Jahr 2024 war ein achter Platz von Zarco in Buriram. Doch hinter den Kulissen wird weiter daran Gas gegeben. Honda hat den ehemaligen technischen Direktor von Aprilia, Romano Albesiano, abgeworben, der seit 2013 in dieser Funktion für die Marke aus Noale tätig war und Gigi Dall’ Igna ersetzte, der zu Ducati wechselte. Dieses Mal ersetzt Albesiano Ken Kawauchi, der zum Testteam wechselt.
Dort arbeitet er mit Takaaki Nakagami und Ex-GP-Sieger Aleix Espargaro zusammen. Die beiden ehemaligen Aprilia-Mitarbeiter Espargaro und Albesiano könnten nur einen kleinen Teil dessen ausmachen, was nötig ist, um Honda HRC wieder auf Kurs zu bringen. Das Team hat bereits private Tests in Thailand durchgeführt, daher bleibt für 2025 – auch in diesem Jahr mit einem neuen Design – nichts unversucht.
