HORTICULTURE IN TELANGANA
The horticulture sector which includes a wide variety of crops such as fruits,
vegetables, spices, plantation crops, floriculture, medicinal and aromatic plants,
cashew etc. is nowadays recognised as an important sector for potential diver-
sification and value addition in agriculture.
It has been recognised that growing horticulture crops is now an ideal option
to improve livelihood security, enhance employment generation, attain income
and food security, and increase income through value addition.
Telangana stands 3rd in area & 8th in production offruits in the country. Ranks 1st in area & Production of
Turmeric. Telangana stands 11th in Area & 13th in Production ofVegetables.8Fruits and vegetables consti-
tutes 74% of the totalhorticulture cropped area. Telangana possessing an asset of suitable Agro- Climatic
conditions and Soils.Availability of vast extents of land for area expansion. Telangana well connected by rail,
road and International Airport has the potential to become an export Hub. Blooming of Retail Fresh Chains in
Hyderabad – provide impetus to production & ensuring better price realizationto grower.Agro based indus-
tries can spur generation ofemployment in future in Telangana State. Telangana is poised to be an Export
Hub with exports of Mango, Banana, Vegetables & Flowers
Total Net Irrigated Area 17.73 Lakh Ha.
Area under Horticulture: 8.20 Lakh Ha (1st Estimates 14-15)
Production of Hort. Crops: 94.54 Lakh MT
Additional area of 0.88 lakh ha brought underhorticulture crops with scheme interventions since
2005 onwards.
Productivity enhancement by rejuvenating old and senile orchards in an area of 0.54 lakh Ha.
Established Poly-houses in 130 acres by covering 346 farmers.
Established 41 Cold storages to minimized Post Harvest Wastages
17 Ripening Chambersto promote safe ripening methods, which are being used effectively by the
Farmers.
Constructed 345 farm ponds to provide life saving irrigation to Horticulture Crops.
The total net area irrigated in Telangana 17.73 lakhs Ha
Tanks – 1.50 Lakh Ha.; Canals – 0.90 Lakh Ha;
Ground Water – 15.25 Lakh Ha.(86%)
Area Covered under Micro Irrigation upto 2013-14 4.79 lakhs Ha
Area to be covered during 2014-15 0.55 Lakh Ha.
Balance potential area for Micro Irrigation 9.91 Lakhs Ha
Minium 18 years is required to cover the balance area
85% of farmers of the State are SF and MF and are mostly dependent on Ground water irrigation.
Soils are mostly Chalka and gravel type with poor water retention capacity.
Keeping in view of the above facts, 1 Lakh Ha. with drip irrigation and sprinklers were brought
under horticulture in 2105-16
