TELANGANA FACT FILE
Telangana is one of the 29 states in India, located in southern India Formed in June 2014
as the youngest state in India, Telangana is situated on the Deccan Plateau, in the central
stretch of the eastern seaboard of the Indian Peninsula. It covers 114,840 square kilometres
(44,340 sq mi) and a population of 35laks aproximately. The region is drained by two major
rivers, with about 79% of the Godavari River catchment area and about 69% of the Krishna
River catchment area, but most of the land is arid. Telangana is also drained by several
minor rivers such as the Bhima, the Maner, the Manjira and the Musi. It is the twelfth
largest state in India, and the twelfth most populated state in India. Its major cities include
Hyderabad, Warangal, Khammam, Karimnagar, Nizamabad and Nalgonda.
Agriculture
The Economy of Telangana is mainly driven by agriculture. Agriculture plays
apivotal role in the economy of the state and the better performance of this sector
is vital for inclusive growth. Sustainable growth in Agriculture continues to be
core agenda of theGovernment and occupies center stage in state economy em-
bodying three thrust areas viz., (i) to promote inclusive growth, (ii) to enhance
rural income, and (iii) to sustain food security.
About 55.49 percent of the State’s population is dependent on some form or theother
on farm activityfor livelihoods, it is imperative to increase the farm incomes
andensuring sustainable growth in Telangana to reduce poverty. The share of ag-
riculture tostate GSDP in 2014-15 is 9.3 percent at current prices.
The pressure on agricultural land is ever increasing for industrialization, urban-
ization, housing, infrastructure and others. All these factors are forcing for
conversion of agricultural landto non-agricultural uses. The scope for expansion
of the area available for cultivation is coming down to that extent, ultimately decrease in net area sown. Paddy
is the major food crop and staple food of the state. Other important crops grown are Maize, Jowar, Red gram,
Green gram, Bengal gram, Groundnut, Soybean, Mango, Cotton, Chillies, Sugarcane etc., and agriculture has
been the chief source of income for the state's economy. During 2013-14, production of total food grains was
recorded at 107.49 lakh tonnes. Of the total food grains production, production of cereals and millets was
102.78 lakh tonnes, pulses 4.71 lakh tonnes. Production of oil seeds was 8.81 lakh tonnes, Chillies 2.80 lakh
tonnes, Turmeric 2.52 lakh tonnes etc.
The Chairman Sri Kishan Rao who has recently taken up the wheel of Agros Development Corporation is
churning all efforts to bring a sizable growth in agricultural output. Agros is offering Farm mechanization
training and leasing of farm machines and equipment at an affordable rent to the farmer so as to enable him to
get better profits and take home the harvest with less manpower and less working time.
Mr.Kishan Rao hails the vision of Chief Minister Sri Chandrasekhar Rao to provide impeccable support to the
farmer and achieve substantial agricultural growth. Mr Kishan Rao is envisaging the plan of introducing Kisan
Indhan Bunks where farmers and other agriculturist can get unadulterated fuel for all the agriculture machines.
This will generate enormous revenue to fulfill the needs of agriculture production.
Farm training sessions are being planned to educate the farmer how to use modern farm machines to get best
benefit from harvest. Right now the department of agriculture is deeply involved bringing into cultivation many
acres of land that have been neglected so far due to lack water resources. Natural water storage facilities are
being provided with the help of irrigation department.
Farmers are regularly monitored and helped with necessary know how. Modern Plant technology suitable for
this region , innovative methods of agriculture are being taken up by agricultural scientists who are constantly
working for the development of Agriculture production in Telangana
