Beneath the Bridge

Maybe the troll just wanted
to escape, to take the time to loll
in the land of cool mud
and make handprint turkeys
on the grey weathered posts
of the bridge without worrying
(for once) whether the lengths
of the fingerprint feathers
or the particular tan of the clay
said anything true about the world.
And what need have trolls
for beauty? Only the fly
hovering on augenblick wings
was there to see. It knows
everything.
