What ’ s new with the faculty
Dr . Patricia Cooney-Hathaway , Professor of Spiritual and Systematic Theology , was awarded the 2021 Catholic Media Association Third Place , Theology Award for her book , Sex and the Spiritual Life : Reclaiming Integrity , Wholeness and Intimacy . She presented “ Navigating Impasse Experiences in the Time of Covid ,” The Rose Mass Ethics Lecture was given on behalf of the Archdiocese of Detroit Bioethics Committee . She published “ Sexuality : The Risk and Challenge of Vulnerability ,” in Human Development magazine ( Fall Issue , 2021 ). She wrote “ Sexuality , Spirituality and Priestly Formation ,” for the second volume of Clerical Sexual Misconduct : Vol . II , A Foundational Conversation , edited by Dr . Jane Adolphe ( Ave Maria Law School ).
Dr . Robert Fastiggi , the Bishop Kevin M . Britt Chair of Dogmatic Theology and
Christology co-authored — along with Ligia Castaldi and Jane Adolphe —“ Civil Divorce and the Catholic Lawyer : Answers to Some Common Moral Questions ” in Catholic Social Science Review , Vol . 26 ( 2021 ). Dr . Fastiggi gave a talk entitled “ Humani Generis : Its Historical Context and Ongoing Significance ” for the St . Anselm College Metaphysics Conference held in Manchester , NH ( June 16 , 2021 ). He gave a presentation on “ Marian Co-redemption and Petitions for a New Dogma : The State of the Question ” for the English-language session of the Congress of the Pontifical Marian Academy International , which was held online ( September 9 , 2021 ). He presented a paper on “ Mary in the Liturgical Year : Pre-conciliar and Postconciliar Expressions ” for the conference of the Society for Catholic Liturgy held at the University of Notre Dame , IN , ( September 25 , 2021 ).
Fr . Charles Fox , Vice-Rector and Dean of Seminarian Formation , gave a talk entitled “ Renewing My Vocation ” at the Spring Retreat for Moderators of
Families of Parishes at St . Paul of the Cross Retreat Center , Detroit . He published “ What Direction Does the Church Give to Homilists ” in Homiletic and Pastoral Review and “ My Flesh for the Life of the World : Ronald Knox on the Mass as a Sacrifice ” in Catholic World Report . He was interviewed in the National Public Radio story , “ Catholic Bishops Consider Whether Pro- Choice Politicians Should Be Denied Communion ” ( aired June 15 , 2021 ).
Dr . Oana Maria Gotia , Professor of Moral Theology and Catholic Social Teaching , had “ Beauty and the Meaning of Shame in the Theology of the Body of St . John Paul II ” ( English ), published in Człowiek – rodzina – naród . Przesłanie św . Jana Pawła II ( Polish ) by M . Pokrywka ( ed .), ( Wydawnictwo KUL , Lublin 2021 , pp . 41 – 53 ). She coedited the Italian book : È necessario ricordare . 100 Anni dalla nascita di Giovanni Paolo II [ It Is Necessary to Remember . 100 Years from the Birth of John Paul II ], ( Cantagalli , Siena , 2021 ). She coedited P . Mazurkiewicz ’ s L ’ identità dell ’ Europa nel contesto di Migrazione ( The Identity of Europe in the Context of Migration ) [ Italian ], ( S . Grygiel – O . Goția ( ed .), Cantagalli , Siena , 2021 ). Her article “ The Fascination of Chastity ” has been published in the Italian book by S . Kamposwski & JJ . Perez-Soba , Festschrift in onore del Prof . Mons . Livio Melina , ( Cantagalli , Siena , 2021 , pp . 143 – 157 ).
Dr . Mary Healy , Professor of Sacred Scripture , gave a faculty retreat day at St . Paul Seminary , St . Paul , MN ( August 26 , 2021 ). She presented a workshop and a plenary session talk at the International Eucharistic Congress in Budapest , Hungary ( September 6 – 9 ). She spoke on the Gospels at clergy study days for the dioceses of Helena , MT , ( September 27 – 28 ), New Ulm , MN , ( October 19 ), and Gary , IN , ( October 26 ).
Dr . Daniel Keating , Professor of Theology , gave a seven-session conference entitled “ Encountering Scripture for Preaching ” for a Deacon ’ s Conference , Abbey of the Hills , SD ( May 13-16 ). He co-authored a book with Gordon Demarais : Called to Christian Joy and Maturity : Forming Missionary Disciples . He addressed a FOCUS summer program in Boyne Mountain and Boyne Highlands on “ The Riches of the Eucharist .” ( July 18 – 21 )
Dr . Ralph Martin , Professor of Theology and Director of Graduate Programs in the New Evangelization , had a Polish translation of A Church in Crisis : Pathways Forward published ( September 2021 ). He presented on the book ’ s themes at an international conference co-sponsored by the Pontifical Gregorian University and the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin , under the Patronage of the Theological Sciences Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences . He gave three presentations at the annual Clergy Convocation for the Diocese of Richmond , VA , and presented at a Catholic Men ’ s Conference for all the dioceses of Connecticut in New Britain , CT .
John M . McDermott , SJ , Professor of Theology , published “ The Centrality of the Eucharist ” in Antiphon , Vol . 28 , Issue 2 ( 2021 ).
Dr . Edward Peters , Edmund Cardinal Szoka Chair of Faculty Development , provided the canon law segment for the “ All Belong : Inclusion in Ministry ” video series being produced by the Disabilities Ministry Leadership Council of the Archdiocese of Detroit . His review of Stephen Doktorczyk ’ s Persistent Disobedience to Church Authority : History , Analysis , and Application of Canon 1371 , appeared in The Jurist , Vol . 77 ( 2021 ).
