Lay Ministers: Get Revved Up at New Speaker Series
Lay men and women pursuing a
degree at Sacred Heart receive more than
just academic training. For one example,
spiritual formation is part of all pastoral
ministry degree programs.
Building on this tradition of ongoing
formation, the seminary has just launched
an exciting new speaker
series. “In the Heart of
the Church” is designed
to bolster the spirituality,
strengthen the faith, and
jumpstart the enthusiasm
of lay ecclesial ministers in
the Archdiocese of Detroit
and neighboring dioceses.
Even more, the speaker series—including
lunch—is free of charge.
“In the Heart of the Church” will
feature presentations from well-known
Catholic leaders who are experts in their
fields. The first talk is on Thursday,
November 5, from 12:00-3:00 PM. ValLimar Jansen is a dynamic conference
speaker and workshop facilitator who has
been moving audiences across the country for years. Tapping into her experience
as a recording artist, professional actor,

On Thursday, April 7, 12:00—3:00 PM,
Deacon Ralph Poyo will deliver a message
that will surely move the crowd. Deacon
Poyo is the founder of New Evangelization
Ministries, whose mission is “Training Saints
to Lead Hearts to
Christ.” He travels to
scores of parishes and
dioceses per year giving
seminars, speaking at
conferences, and leading parish retreats with
a special emphasis on helping parishes to
become radical centers of re-evangelization.
All “In the Heart of the Church” presentations will be held at Sacred Heart Major
Seminary. Anyone involved in lay ministry
is welcome, not just graduates of the seminary or current students.
And don’t forget: There is no admission charge and lunch is on the house!

House by House
Msgr. Daniel Trapp has watched the
neighborhood of Pingree Park surrounding his parish decline since the economic
crisis of 2008. Two years ago, Monsignor
Trapp, graduate spiritual director at Sacred Heart, decided to push back against
the decline. He has been acquiring abandoned homes and renovating them, and
cleaning up the weedy lots with volunteer
help. He has plans to convert the overgrown lots into urban farming plots that
will help to provide jobs.
Monsignor Trapp’s efforts have been
recognized in a recent Detroit News article.

A Good Time for a Great Cause
Thirty-one teams. 138 golfers. Sunshine
and short-sleeve weather that felt more like
San Diego than Plymouth, Michigan. It was
another day of camaraderie and friendly competition at the Desert Classic Golf Outing. The
annual fundraiser was held on Monday, September 21 at the Inn at St. John’s golf course.
Why is it called the “Desert” Classic?
Founder Edward Bovich gave the outing
its name because all entry fees donated by
the golfers support the seminary’s Desert
Formation Experience. This is the thirty-day
spiritual pilgrimage first-year graduate seminarians make each year to the Holy Land.
There, they experience firsthand the places
Christ walked and taught, suffered and died,
while seeking his guidance in their own
walk toward the priesthood.
Desert Classic participants enjoy more than
just golf. A pastry bar opens an hour before
tee time, a box lunch is delivered
