address the “Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context
of the New Evangelization.” The Holy Father himself has spoken
repeatedly about the importance of the family in contemporary society
as that unique school in which individuals are loved and formed, and
from which individuals go forth to give genuine witness to Jesus.
In the working document for the Synod, a preparatory document, it is noted, “Since
the family is the natural place for personal development, it is the foundation of society and
the State.” And then the document goes on to state, “From the very first years of a person’s
existence, the family is the place for the transmission and learning

of values, such as brotherhood, loyalty, love for the truth and
work, and respect and solidarity between generations, not
to mention the art of communication and a sense of joy
in living.”
The work of the Synod will be a critical reflection on
the role of the family and individuals in the world today.
This issue of the Mosaic will join the conversation and seek
to explore the fundamental questions of what it means to be
human, the love from which we were created, and how we relate
with each other.
As a member of the Sacred Heart community, be assured of our continued prayers and
gratitude for your generosity. Your contributions make possible the work of formation that
we do, preparing our seminarians, permanent deacons, and lay leaders to be heroic witnesses
with missionary hearts in the world today.
Sincerely yours in Christ,

people of the Archdiocese of Detroit in a letter on January 28. This “Year
of Prayer” began on Ash Wednesday, March 5, and will end on Easter
Sunday, April 5, 2015.
The archbishop is inviting all Catholics to be open to a fresh experience
of the Holy Spirit. Through prayer and willingness, by example and by
action, we can be bolder proclaimers of the Christian message.
