Jefferson's new Order
Not only did Jefferson use ancient architectural techniques for the capitol building, but he also put them in his home, Monticello. In the interior of Jefferson's plantation home are metopes and triglyphs that act as crown molding. This is highly unique because, in ancient times, metopes and triglyphs were meant to adorn the outside of a temple. Having them in the interior of the house marks it as Jefferson's temple and or his sanctuary. The design of the metopes themselves is also unusual, being an alternation of rosettes and ox skulls. This unusual design was once again meant to correspond to life in the new world, with the ox and rosettes representing the native population.
