LANCE STROLL RACES ON TO THE FORMULA 1 STAGE
Il y a très longtemps , en 1997 , Jacques Villeneuve devenait le premier ( et dernier ) pilote canadien à remporter le championnat de Formule 1 . Le Montréalais Lance Stroll naissait l ’ année qui suivit ce couronnement .
Vingt ans plus tard , Lance sera aux commandes de son propre bolide lors du Grand Prix du Canada en juin . C ’ est un retour à la case départ , non seulement pour le jeune pilote , mais aussi pour son écurie , Williams Racing . Jacques pilotait pour l ’ équipe Williams lorsqu ’ il gagna son titre de F1 . Et l ’ année 2017 marque le 50 e anniversaire du circuit de Montréal , le Circuit Gilles Villeneuve , nommé en l ’ honneur du père de Jacques , une légende de la course qui remporta six victoires en Grand Prix .
« J ’ ai d ’ excellents souvenirs de cette piste », raconte Lance , directement du circuit d ’ entraînement d ’ Oxfordshire , en Angleterre , le domicile de l ’ écurie Williams Racing . « J ’ ai grandi en regardant les courses là-bas . Ce sera un rêve qui deviendra réalité de participer à ce Grand Prix . Et ce sera encore plus spécial , car c ’ est le 50 e anniversaire . De faire partie du Grand Prix du Canada est incroyable , dit-il . Tous mes amis et mes proches seront là pour m ’ encourager . »
« Il est parfait pour nous », disait Claire Williams , lors d ’ une entrevue accordée au The Globe & Mail . « Il a du talent derrière le volant , il est intelligent , il donne de bons commentaires aux ingénieurs , et il apprend vite . Alors pour nous , c ’ était une décision facile », affirmait M me Williams à propos de la signature de son jeune espoir . Lance sera le deuxième plus jeune pilote de l ’ histoire de la F1 . Seul le Belge Max Verstappen , qui fit ses débuts en 2016 , est plus jeune . g
Way back in 1997 , Jacques Villeneuve became the first ( and last ) Canadian driver to claim the Formula 1 title . Montreal ’ s Lance Stroll was born a year after that crowning achievement .
Twenty years later , Stroll will get behind the wheel of his own speed machine at the Canadian Grand Prix in June . Things will have come full circle for not only the young driver but for his team , Williams Racing . Villeneuve was driving for the Williams team when he won his F1 title . And 2017 just happens to mark the 50th anniversary of the Montreal track , Circuit Gilles Villeneuve , named in honour of Jacques ’ father , a racing legend who won six Grand Prix races .
“ I have great memories of the track ,” says Stroll from the practice track in Oxfordshire , England , home of Williams Racing . “ I grew up watching races there . It ’ s going to be a dream come true to be participating in the grand prix . It ’ s going to be extra special with it being the 50th anniversary . To be part of the Canadian Grand Prix is incredible ,” he says . “ All of my friends and family will be there to cheer me on .”
“ He ’ s the full package for us ,” said Claire Williams in an interview with The Globe & Mail . “ He has talent in the cockpit , he ’ s intelligent , he gives great feedback to the engineers , and he ’ s a really quick learner . So for us , it was an easy decision ,” said Ms . Williams on the signing of the young hopeful . gg
