LES MEILLEURES ÉCOLES DE MONTRÉAL MONTREAL ’ S BEST SCHOOLS
CENTENNIAL ACADEMY A school that does more than teach : it changes lives
“ At Centennial , we focus on helping students develop effective learning behaviours and skills ,” says Head of School , Angela Burgos . “ And , we achieve extraordinary results : although 90 % of our students have been diagnosed with learning challenges , nearly 90 % graduate in just five years – a rate much higher than the provincial average .”
In fact , Centennial Academy is a school like no other . It is the only secondary school in Quebec whose mission is to help students master their learning challenges , take control of their studies , and graduate in five years .
Ms . Burgos describes Centennial ’ s approach as a paradigm shift : a fundamentally different way of thinking about learning challenges and how to teach children who have them . “ By combining fifty years of experience with the latest research findings , we have developed an approach that helps students succeed even beyond their own expectations ,” she says .
Here are a few things that Centennial does differently , and that their students and parents really appreciate : 1 . Students don ’ t repeat grades ; 2 . Students don ’ t leave class to receive special help ; 3 . Students complete their most difficult homework at school ; 4 . Students don ’ t need extra tutoring ; 5 . Parents are encouraged not to help students with their school work , which relieves a lot of stress for the family .
Centennial will soon be moving into a brand-new home . “ We will be moving into the western wing of the Grand Séminaire de Montréal building in 2019 ,” says Ms . Burgos .“ It ’ s the start of an exciting new chapter for us , and it means we will be able to accept even more students .”
