Excavation Area
The Overseer’s Site
Join the Montpelier Archaeology team on
our excavation at the Overseer's House
Site. This site was the overseer's home
from the 1790s-1844 and is located
adjacent to the Madison Family
Cemetery and overlooks the Field
Quarter. The overseers that lived at this
site were in charge of managing the
Home Farm, or the complex of buildings
in the fields below Montpelier's Visitor
Center. Through metal detector survey
from 2016-2018, we have located dense
concentrations of artifacts—and a
potential well. Overall, our aim with
these excavations is to locate the house,
yard areas, and trash deposits in this area.
All of our excavations during the 2019-
2021 seasons will focus on this site.
