Program Staff
Matthew Reeves, Ph.D., Directory of Archaeology
Dr. Reeves has been with the Foundation since 2000 and
oversees archaeological research at James Madison’s
Montpelier. Over the past 2 decades, Dr. Reeve’s
research has focused on plantation life and Civil War
encampments with an overall focus on sites of the African
Diaspora (both pre- and post-emancipation). Prior to
Montpelier, he directed projects at Manassas National
Battlefield Park, Jefferson Patterson Park, various New
York DOT projects, and has worked on a wide variety of
historic and prehistoric sites in Maryland, Virginia, New
York and Jamaica.
Terry Brock, Ph.D., Assistant Director of Archaeology
Dr. Brock joined Montpelier in 2014 after completing his
dissertation on mid-19 th century plantation life in Southern
Maryland (St. Mary’s City). He has a rich set of
experience in public archaeology, social media, and
finding new ways to engage the public with archaeological
discoveries. He has worked on projects in Michigan,
Virginia, Maryland, and Rome. Terry runs the field
programs during the expedition and writes up the research
reports at the end of the season.
Chris Pasch, B.A., Archaeologist, Crew Chief
Chris received his B.A. in History and English
Literature from St. Mary's College of Maryland in 2013,
and is currently working on an M.A. in Historical
Archaeology through the University of Leicester. His
primary research interests include the study of identity
(particularly gender) and the relationship of memory
with material culture and place. He is passionate about
ceramic history, architecture, the use of technology and
social media in archaeology, and theory/historiography.
