Fire department and sheriff keep city safe
Monticello Fire Department
The Monticello Fire Department’ s fire station at 103 Chelsea Road was completed in February 2020. Fire department operations and the dedicated crew of volunteer firefighters moved into the state-of-the-art facility in March 2020.
Fire Chief Jake Olinger, now in his 14th year with the MFD, leads the department, while Dustin Craig serves as the assistant fire chief. The four fire captains for 2026 are Mike Mossey, Josh Samuelson, Kurt Liefert and Jared Parker. The department currently has 30 volunteer members.
The Monticello Fire Department operates eight apparatus from one station, including Wright County’ s special response unit for hazardous materials and technical rescues.
The department’ s provided services include fire suppression and prevention / education, rescues, hazardous materials containment, code enforcement, fire inspections and permit review, along with plenty of community outreach.
The Monticello Fire Department serves the City of Monticello, Monticello Township and Silver Creek Township, while also providing mutual aid to neighboring areas.

Wright County Sheriff’ s Office
Public safety in Monticello is provided by the Wright County Sheriff’ s Office, which delivers law enforcement, emergency response and correctional services throughout the county. As Minnesota’ s third-largest sheriff’ s office, it employs more than 300 people, including about 170 sworn deputies.
The office provides law enforcement services to unincorporated areas of Wright County and contracts police services with 13 cities, including Monticello.
The sheriff’ s office is organized into 11 divisions: Administration, Bailiff, Civil Process, Communications, Community Services, Corrections, Criminal Investigations, Patrol, Recreational Enforcement, Special Investigations( Narcotics), and Warrants / Transports. The Patrol Division is the largest, with 88 deputies, including nine sergeants, making Wright County’ s patrol unit one of the five largest in Minnesota by deputy staffing.
