Scottish Power targets 550 MW hydrogen capacity by 2025 UK utility Scottish Power is bidding to have as much as 550 MW of green hydrogen capacity online by 2028 , Barry Carruthers , the firm ’ s hydrogen director said . A total of 10-50 MW of the fuel – created from excess renewables – would be added before 2025 , while a 500 MW site “ and everything in between ” would be up and running by the end of the decade . Carruthers expected several green hydrogen projects to emerge , “ if not by the end of 2022 , then certainly in 2023 ”. KP
French green hydrogen infrastructure “ severely lacking ” French infrastructure for transporting and storing green hydrogen is “ very backward ”, said domestic TSO GRT Gaz . “ We will have to get started . Countries like Germany and the Netherlands all think about logistics
, not just generation . We haven ’ t worked on this question ,” said the TSO ’ s director , Thierry Trouve . The idea of producing green hydrogen near where it was consumed – a model championed by Engie in particular , to maximise project profitability – was “ completely wrong ”, said Trouve . MB
ECJ rules in favour of Spain ’ s 7 % generation tax The European Court of Justice said Spain ’ s controversial 7 % tax on power generation was not incompatible with EU regulations . The ruling gave the Spanish government some “ breathing space ” as the tax raised EUR 1.2-1.5bn annually , essential funds for “ balancing ” the power system , analysts said . The country imposed the tax in 2012 to help pay off a so-called tariff deficit – when the power system ’ s operational costs exceeded its income – of almost EUR 30bn . PB

Antwerp ’ s coal handling slumps 60 % in Q1 Europe ’ s second busiest port handled just 0.23m tonnes of coal in the year ’ s first quarter , more than 60 % lower than the volume recorded in January-March 2020 , amid declining regional demand , an Antwerp port authority spokesman said . This equated to around three fully laden panamax vessels – which have a deadweight tonnage of 60,000-80,000t – and compared with 0.59m tonnes handled in the first quarter of last year . “ This decrease is due to the growing supply of green energy and reduced demand for coal from the steel sector ,” said the spokesman . Europe ’ s coal-fired generation accounted for just 14 % of Europe ’ s generation mix in the first three months of the year , compared with 40 % from renewable energy sources , according to data from Finnish technology group Wartsila .
