PRESERVING HISTORY
As part of its observation of MONTCLAIR’S 150TH ANNIVERSARY , MONTCLAIR
HISTORY CENTER has received a grant from the New Jersey Council for the
Humanities to record the life stories of longtime community members. Montclair
State University students trained in taking oral histories will be available on March 28,
11 a.m. - 2 p.m.; April 6, 1-4 p.m. and April 21, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.; elders in the community
are encouraged to reserve a slot by emailing or calling MHC. Once the archival
information has been collected, it’s hoped that the stories can be highlighted
during the fall in the history center’s exhibits and programs. 108 Orange Road,
(973) 744-1796, montclairhistory.org
At THE TEA STORE , customers can choose from
more than 40 tea varieties including lavender mint,
cacao chai, Himalayan black and lemon ginger.
Baked goods from THE PIE STORE , the shop’s sister
business a door away that is also owned by Briton
Samantha Codling, complement the beverages, and
range from raisin scones to apple spice cake with
caramel drizzle. A row of stools along the front
window allows guests to decompress while sipping
tea and watching the world go by along Watchung
Avenue. 106 Watchung Ave., (973) 932-0664,

THE CYCLEBAR EXPERIENCE
Upper Montclair
A CORNERSTONE OF THE COMMUNITY
Recognizing a need that wasn’t being met by the community — or most localities, for
that matter — resident Wendy Lacey spearheaded the creation of CORNERSTONE
MONTCLAIR . Cornerstone is a concept as well as a physical location: The bright and
cheerful space on the corner of Bellevue and Northview avenues is home to busi-
nesses and initiatives “committed to empowering people of all abilities to be included
as active participants in the vibrancy of Montclair.” Among its current occupants are
The Inclusive Movement Center, Arts Unbound, Creative Speech Solutions and a toy
store called Sunshine Sam’s that specializes in battery-operated and screen-free toys.
Cornerstone has a multi-purpose 440-square-foot community room that may be
rented for events and activities; an old-fashioned general store with penny candy and
gifts will open in April. 198 Bellevue Ave., (973) 337-2388, cornerstonemontclair.com
