HOME
WHERE THE FAMILY REALLY LIVES
The outdated kitchen – originally built with a chimney smack in the middle – was completely gutted to create a family-friendly space. A wood-topped center island now serves as a popular gathering
place for breakfast and lunch, while the matching kitchen table has become the designated locale for
family dinners and homework. Wooden flooring enhances the sense of continuity between the kitchen
and the rest of the house. A “central command station” at the far end includes a desk, filing cabinets,
shelves, and a bulletin board for organizing the busy schedules of three boys. The addition of French
doors, coffered ceilings with recessed lighting and radiant heat in the floor add up to a feeling of
warmth that’s both figurative and literal. A new butler’s pantry (bottom left) contains an extra refrigerator,
sink and the requisite storage space for a large family. A powder room and a mudroom (top left) with
cubbies for all complete this attractive and utilitarian heart of the home. ➤
