THE BUZZ INTREPID GYM H.I.I.T. ME 312 Bloomfield Ave., Montclair 973-893-5614 Like its Hoboken sibling, Montclair’s new INTREPID GYM provides high-intensity interval training alongside a spin room. Unlike the former, the Montclair gym attracts a more diverse demographic. “Suspension-training is good for all ages,” says Adam Kant, owner of the Hoboken Intrepid and co-owner of the Montclair branch. Memberships come in three varieties: gym alone, spinning alone or a combo of the two; personal training is also available. “We call this the ‘third place,’” says Kant. “There’s home, work, and that missing segment of what else you do when you’re not sleeping or working. It’s a very community-driven place to be.” OIL & VINEGAR 28 S. Park St., Montclair 862-333-4244 The recently-opened OIL & VINEGAR joins its 100-odd sister locations in Europe in bringing varieties of these condiments, plus sauces, jams, tapas-type foods and other goodies to town centers that get a lot of foot traffic. “Downtowns are making a comeback,” says owner Jeffrey Enright. A Jersey City native, Enright recalls “walking up Central Avenue to the bread store, the meat guy and the fish guy. Food keeps us together when we’re not on Skype!” The store operates on the refillable bottle model, whereby customers buy a bottle, then bring it back to be refilled – a good fit for a town that prizes conservation. Our advice: While filling up on extra virgin olive oil, go for the delicious strawberry onion chutney, too. 14 MONTCLAIR MAGAZINE SPRING 2016 AMORE CALANDRA’S PIZZERIA & CATERING 322 Orange Road, Montclair 973-509-7000 ANY WAY YOU SLICE IT Jack Calandra has a solid track record of operating pizza parlors, having run two in Newark and one in Bloomfield before opening the South End’s AMORE CALANDRA’S PIZZERIA & CATERING. The Orange Road pizzeria offers classic fare like baked ziti and homemade eggplant rollatini, as well as pizzas, whole and by the slice, with a wide variety of toppings. But the best recommendation for the newcomer may be in the owner’s genes: Both parents are from Sicily, and his mother, a great cook, often lends a hand at the stove and oven. Come for takeout, or stay home for delivery; minimal seating is available. INTREPID PHOTO COURTESY MALKA MEDIA; PIZZA: THINKSTOCK TOPPING OFF YOUR OIL
