Jamestown , Rhode Island , is located on an island in Naragansett Bay , a “ historic , bucolic , but less splashy ” getaway than nearby Newport , says designer and architect Andrew Suvalsky . Sulvasky , whose work has been featured in The New York Times , House & Garden and other outlets , has offices in New York City and Montclair , where he resides with his young family . But he spent agood amount oftime in Jamestown while designing this nineteenthcentury shingled home for clients who fell in love with the area and wanted to live there full-time . “ I wanted to amp up the summer feeling ofbeing near water , with soft colors that have different levels of intensity ,” says Suvalsky . Combined with an eclectic mix of Mid-century and vintage elements , the resulting look is as timeless as , well , the sea .
BRIGHT BEGINNINGS
( Above ) The Jamestown property was most likely built in the 1880s , says Suvalsky . As was common then , it was built close to the street , so the backyard is far more expansive than the front . ( Right ) The entry vestibule “ amps up the summer feel of being near water ,” he says . “ The lemon colors are pleasant and inviting .”( Opposite ) The living room to the right of the front-to-back foyer has a “ summerleaning color scheme ” with an ocher-colored sofa , orange pillows and blue chair . Suvalsky found a coffee table made of reclaimed wood at astore in Connecticut ; the custom-made cotton rug is from The New England Collection , a company that specializes in early American weave patterns with modern twists .
