In Montclair , talk about renovations that update homes while preserving classic features usually centers on Victorians , Craftsman Colonials and other residences built during the town ’ s boom years of 1880-1920 . But the Mid-Century Moderns among usare getting up in years , too . New engineering techniques are now enabling builders to bring these beauties into the 21st century while enhancing the features — large windows , changes in elevation and integration with nature — their owners love .

That is what happened to this mid-century modern home set into the hillside just below Mills Reservation in Upper Montclair . Over eight-to-10 months , contractor Ryan Hodgson and his team atRTH Building Company realized the vision of architect Jeff Jordan and performed agut renovation that not only restored the property , but opened it up further to suit contemporary tastes .

( Clockwise from left ) Steps to spruce up the exterior of the home included repairing the stucco , painting the brick and foundation , replacing all the windows and installing radiant heat in the steep driveway so cars wouldn ’ t slip in inclement weather . The metal stairs with wood treads are original to the staircase visitors see when they walk through the front door ; RTH added a piece of steel for support at the top in lieu of a wall that was removed . A support beam extends from the built-in piece separating the entry area from the homeowner ’ s art studio .
