dining out VERONA INN 624 BLOOMFIELD AVE., VERONA, (973) 239-0544 MOST ENTREES $15-$20, FULL BAR, OPEN 7 DAYS, NO LUNCH MENU, FAMILY FRIENDLY, TAKE OUT This local legend has followed a basic business plan of serving “the very best burger on a great bun and the coldest beer available.” But it also has an extensive menu for those who want a hearty dinner or a large selection of beer, including lots of local brews. The atmosphere inside is lively. But during the summer months on the inn’s private back patio, with its pretty paving stones, the ambiance is more relaxed. Sit at a table under an umbrella, and don’t miss the menu section devoted to “fries and tots,” which includes a wide variety of toppings such as Old Bay, truffle and Parmesan, Cantina (cheddar, bacon and jalapenos) and Lone Star (chili and cheddar). BLOOMFIELD STEAK AND SEAFOOD HOUSE 409 FRANKLIN ST., BLOOMFIELD, (973) 680-4500 MOST ENTREES OVER $20, FULL BAR, CLOSED MONDAYS, FAMILY FRIENDLY, TAKE OUT This historic building, dating back to 1676, was a farmhouse, hospital, and church before being converted into a steak and seafood restaurant. If the walls could talk, they would share a fascinating history. But one of the nicest places to eat here is on the back patio, where meals are served on warm days in the spring, summer and fall. It has comfy couches, a fire pit, bright red umbrellas, lots of flowers and an occasional well-behaved dog. Quality aged steaks are served at a fraction of the cost of similar dishes in city steakhouses. SUGGESTION: Slurp down some Blue Point Oysters, available raw or topped with garlic, butter and Parmesan, then grilled in the shell. 62 MAY 2018 MONTCLAIR MAGAZINE BLOOMFIELD SUGGESTION: Grab a brew and dive into the “BBQ Bowl” with grilled marinated steak, smoked pulled pork, sautéed onions and KC-style barbecue sauce, set atop garlic mashed potatoes.
