BEFORE 2 ...ON DOWN THROUGH THE SECOND FLOOR The water continued on its path through the master bathroom wall on the second floor; ironically, this room had been redesigned two years earlier. Julie recalls the period when all the walls were down and the bathroom was completely exposed, and the relief she felt when she could have privacy again. 3 ...TO THE BASEMENT The walls between the laundry room and the basement bathroom were saturated before this renovation, which transformed the space into an appealing guest bath with upgraded shower stall and attractive new tiles. AN EPILOGUE: The efforts — and trauma — of the months-long redesign almost came to naught over the holidays, when the Cerfs were once again away on vacation, and a water tube on their fur- nace cracked, causing the indoor temperature to plummet so low that the windows in Julie’s office were iced from the inside.
