Iknow Ishouldn’ t play favorites, but Ican’ t help it: If there’ s a Montclair Magazine that best captures what the town is all about( to me), it’ s the May issue. Why? Because it highlights the local arts scene that attracts visitors— and future residents— toour area. In“ She Gets the Show on the Road,” we talk to Melissa Miller, aproducer for Jerry Seinfeld who makes sure his Netflix series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, runs smoothly. Montclairian Ty Raney shares what it’ s like to perform comedy routines for the ultimate tough crowd— prisoners(“ A Stand Up Guy”). And we’ ve extended our Arts roundup to include aheads up about Montclair-based band Elk City, and their just-released album Everybody’ s Insecure.
The biggest local arts story this time of year, of course, is the Montclair Film Festival. Now in its seventh season, it runs from April 26 through May 7, and will feature too many provocative and fascinating films to mention( see the two-page spread of highlights inside). We will disclose here that the Storyteller Series features some major out-of-town talents: actors Rachel Weisz, Nick Offerman, performance artist Taylor Mac, and actors Jeff Daniels and Ethan Hawke. At atime when Hollywood is giving overdue attention to women in film, Montclair Magazine’ s coverage focuses on area filmmakers who are female(“ These Women Have Stories to Tell”), and how their experiences have informed their work.
See you at the movies! And if you have acreative project that we should know about, fill us in at montclair @ northjersey. com. ■
