SCREEN SAVER
Here’s a concept: The next time you break your smartphone screen,
don’t trade up for a new one. Instead, take it to THE DEVICE SHOP in
Upper Montclair, one of seven locations throughout New York and
New Jersey. Repairs generally come in at $100 or less, and are usually
done while you wait. Staffers can also remove water from dropped
devices using a proprietary “variable frequency ultrasonic bath.”
Customers pay when their fixed devices are returned to them;
repair work is backed up by a six-month warranty.

MOBAY

If you love authentic Jamaican food and can’t
make it to Montego Bay (nickname: Mobay), you’re
in luck: CAFÉ MOBAY recently opened on Broad Street,
near Watchung Avenue. Owner/operator Patrick Smith, who moved to
Bloomfield two years ago and is currently the executive chef at its Forest
Hills Field Club, was born and raised in Jamaica, and his jerk chicken and
braised oxtail entrees are the real deal. Appetizers such as mango shrimp
and yucca puffs, homemade tropical drinks and tasty desserts round out
a satisfying meal at the cozy eatery, which also offers takeout, delivery
and weekend brunch.

Could PLAYA BOWLS be the biggest

bowl, with frozen coconut meat
and ground-up pineapple, is also
popular, as are a variety of smoothies
and juices. “We put out a consumer survey
last summer to decide where to expand to
next,” says Desi Saran (pictured at left

Abby Taylor). The three started the chain’s
original pop-up stands on the boardwalk in
Belmar. “Montclair was at the top of the
list. It’s one of our busiest stores right now,”
says Saran. The Church Street space was
previously occupied, tellingly, by a Red
Mango frozen yogurt outlet.
