For Derrick , who was initially overwhelmed by the news but quickly rallied , it represents the long-awaited chance for some payback . DIWALI AT MONTCLAIR ARTMUSEUM
On October 16 , the Montclair Art Museum , in partnership with AAPI Montclair , held Montclair ’ s first-ever public celebration of Diwali , the festival of lights that honors the new year and the triumph of good over evil , observed by Hindus , Jains and Sikhs . The event , called LIGHT UP MONTCLAIR , featured live individual and group performances , arts and crafts activities and a mix of cuisine that included Indian and Caribbean food , tacos , ice cream and chai tea . Roughly 1,400 people turned out for the three hours of festivities , which were planned as a fun way to educate people about the Asian American and South Asian community and its customs . “ The joy we saw in everyone ’ s faces is just something I can never forget ,” says Sumeet Kapoor , one of Light Up Montclair ’ s organizers .
