MOMATH , MOSUCCESS
Is a number the opposite of a feeling ? Is aproof the opposite of apoem ? These are questions Montclair High School student JULIA SCHANEN poses in her free-verse poem “ Math Person ,” about the conflicts inherent in being a girl competing in mathematics , her “ secret weakness ” that makes her feel “ thrilled .” Recently , it was her creative efforts that were recognized : Schanen won first place in the writing category of the Steven H . Strogatz Prize for Math Communication competition . The award was presented by the National Museum of Mathematics ( MOMATH ) in New York City . Steven Strogatz is the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor of Applied Mathematics at Cornell University .
The prize is awarded annually to a small number of high school students in the U . S . and abroad who have successfully incorporated math into social media , art , literature , videos and performance . This year , MoMath received 63 entries from 15 states and 11 countries , including Brazil , Czech Republic , China , India , Korea , Mexico , Philippines , Saudi Arabia , Spain , Turkey and the United States . Many of the winners shared an award of 1,150 “ pi dollars ” ( a total of $ 3,612.84 ).
Schanen , now a junior , accepted her award in a virtual ceremony held during the summer . “ I ’ ve noticed that people feel free to say ‘ I ’ m not amath person !’, but no one would dare say ‘ I ’ m not a words person !’ or joke about being illiterate ,” Schanen points out .“ I thought it ’ d be interesting to explore this and show how amath person is also awords person , just as a words person is amath person . Because in the end , we ’ re all just people .”

ARARE SIGHTING IN GLEN RIDGE : NEW APARTMENTS
With 90 % of Glen Ridge designated a historic district and land that can be developed a rare commodity , new construction here is uncommon . But the borough of 7,000 is now home to THE CLARUS GLEN RIDGE , a new luxury rental apartment building near Montclair ’ s Bay Street train station . The building ’ s 110 apartments on 2.2 acres on Baldwin Street , previously occupied by five private homes , consist of 47 one-bedroom and 46 two-bedroom units . There ’ s a gym , covered parking for 188 cars and adog park .
In the style of many new downtown buildings , Clarus apartments are on the smaller side , with spacious common areas . The building has a lobby lounge with a twosided fireplace ; a reading lounge ; a parlor with fireplace and wet bar ; a business center ; a movie theater , billiards room and courtyard with grills and firepits . Rent for a one-bedroom starts at $ 2,500 ; two-bedrooms start in the low $ 3,000s , with higher prices for apartments with balconies and / or dens .
Though building during the pandemic caused some delays , it also allowed for some last-minute design changes , according to builder JMF Properties . For example , private workspaces were added to the business center , dens were added to some units and the design of the parking lot was changed to allow residents direct access to their floors , for those who want to socially distance .

NO SOUFFLÉ CUPS NECESSARY
When David “ Davey ” Morales worked as the executive chef of The Twisted Elm , a beloved gastropub in Elmwood Park that abruptly closed in July 2019 , customers would tell him he should bottle the barbecue sauces he used in his dishes . “ When people start asking you for little soufflé cups to-go with your sauce , you know you ’ re onto something ,” he says .
Now Cedar Grove resident Morales , along with his friend and now business partner Vincent “ Vinny ” Botti , who worked as a bartender at the pub , have bottled the sauces . They are available in four North Jersey locations : LuLu ’ s Artisanal Cafe in Montclair , Ghost Hawk Brewing Company in Clifton , and Whole Foods Market in Paramus and Closter . Called DM SAUCES , they come in five flavors : Spicy Maple , Classic , Asian , Honey and Stout , the latter using beer from and introduced at Ghost Hawk .
