FALL 2019 MONTCLAIR MAGAZINE
Since this issue features an Essex Fells estate full of smart home
technology, we thought our Vintage page should reflect a “futuristic”
home from back in the day. Fellsbridge — also located in Essex Fells –
was constructed in 1957 as a “concept house, designed for the ‘future,’”
according to its owner, preservation architect, historian and curator
Frank Gerard Godlewski. According to his Fellsbridge blog, “This
unique redwood house… is designed by Edward Bowser Jr., one of the
few Americans to work in the Paris studio of the visionary architect
Le Corbusier. The house’s ‘butterfly’ roof and main built form are
reminiscent of Le Corbusier’s Council General Building of the
United Nations in New York City.”
