LOOKING BACK
En Plein Air
Circa 1971
The Montclair Art Museum, which was the setting for our “Art for Art’s Sake” photo shoot, has long been a gathering place for
students, as well as connoisseurs, of creativity. The Yard School of Art – called simply the Art School when this photo was taken –
was founded in 1924, a short 10 years after the Museum itself, and has offered year-round classes to budding artists of all ages ever
since. Courses have included lessons in drawing, painting, collage, illustration, pastels and printmaking, as well as the recent additions
of Ceramics Studio and Digital Media Lab instruction. Above, students apply charcoal to paper, as a teacher uses spray fixative
to prevent smudging. Working in the open air allows the noxious fumes to escape.
