DREAMING IN COLOR
Olivia ’ s room has splashes of pink , her favorite color , but not too much of it . “ It ’ s such an obvious color for a girls ’ room , so Ididn ’ t want it to be dominant ,” says Alvarez . The mint gray color of the walls and side table is more muted , she says , and makes for the basis of anice color scheme when combined with the coral bedframe and variations on pink in the Roman shade and the paintings . ( Far right ) The primary bedroom ’ s walls are painted in a soothing , neutral Kendall Charcoal color from Benjamin Moore . To make the space more interesting , Alvarez has added varying textures and patterns — aSisal rug topped by a busy vintage rug , a burled wood nightstand , a lumbar pillow made with silk from Thailand , and windows framed by Roman shades and floral-patterned draperies .
ROOM FOR GROWING UP
This room , which belongs to Alvarez ’ s son , has both an inexpensive Sisal rug topped by a vintage flatweave rug and an artwork the designer commissioned that serves as a focal point . “ I try to spend more money on the focal points , and save money on other things like the cribfrom IKEA ,” she says .“ He ’ ll outgrow that in three years !” Though the curtains from Anthropologie , the rocking horseand the guitar from a music producer friend make this the perfect child ’ s bedroom , Alvarez notes that the artwork and runner are features that will allow her son to grow up in the same space . ■
