DRAWING THE EYES UPWARD
The family room ( left ) and dining room ( right ) both sport shades of blue — the walls of the former are covered in Water ’ sEdge by Benjamin Moore — but they have something else in common : details that “ make the brain think the room is higher ,” says Alvarez . In the family room , this is achieved with the placement of the landscape paintings above the columns . In the dining room , the ceiling ’ s modern wallpaper and fixture command attention . At the same time , “ I want every room to be a different experience ,” she says . In the family room , the dark , busy pattern of the low-pile vintage rug makes sense as a place where Alvarez ’ s daughter and son , ages 6 and 2 , can snack . The dining room is furnished in lighter tones with darker accents in the artwork ( yes , that ’ s adog styled as Napoleon on the wall ) and the classic Bauhaus-style Hoffman chairs .
