Meet Montclair’s new superintendent of schools

r. Kendra Johnson is a
trailblazer in a role that
has taken a surprisingly
long time to fill for a
progressive bastion like
Montclair: She is the
first African-American superintendent
of the Montclair School District.
Dr. Johnson was appointed to
the post in April after being one of
the three finalists in a superinten-
dent search. She started on the job
on May 1. She was already known
to educators, students and parents
for serving as the district’s assistant
superintendent for equity, curriculum
and instruction for nearly two years.
Before that, she was the chief aca-
demic officer in the Trenton Public
Schools, and taught in school syste
