MONTCLAIR BARBER PLACES SECOND IN COMPETITION
We may like our haircutters, but how many of us can say that the ones we go to are award-winning? If your barber is Montclair resident JANUARY FONSECA- SABUNE, you havethat bragging right. Fonseca- Sabune, who is abarber at Vinny’ s Barber Shop on Fullerton Avenue, competed against 33 other East Coast female barbers at the Connecticut Barber Expo in Hartford this spring, and brought home a second-place trophy; all were tasked with executing a skin-fade combover with a hard part. The triumph followed her third place showing at the Universal Barber Show in Atlantic City in June, 2017. Fonseca-Sabune became interested in barbering while attending cosmetology school.“ Some of the first known barbers were priests and / or surgeons,” she says. Her long-term plans are to be the first female barbershop owner in Montclair. She is seen here styling Jacob, a repeat customer.“ His parents drove two and a half hours to let him be my canvas!” she says.

HACKENSACK MERIDIAN HEALTH SCHOOL OF MEDICINE IS OPEN
Six years after pharmaceutical giant Hoffman La Roche announced that it would be closing its Nutley campus, the first new private medical school in 50 years opened its doors there. THE HACKENSACK MERIDIAN HEALTH SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AT SETON HALL UNIVERSITY’ s first class consists of roughly60students, who began their studies in July.“ This is ahuge deal for New Jersey,” Gov. Phil Murphy told scores of elected officials and medical leaders at the school’ s ribbon-cutting ceremony weeks earlier.“ It is the heart that beats anew life into the community.” The school will not only train doctors who are statistically more likely to practice in the area, but will help the local economy. It will also bring nurses and other health professionals into the same courses and training methods as future doctors— a modern take on medical education.
