abor Day approaches
once again, and with it,
a new school season and
the Back-to-School issue
of Montclair Magazine.
But like our kids, who
seem to grow like weeds over the
summer and return
looking different, this
year we also sport a new
look. Our feature lineup
will include more sports
coverage, as well as
colorful roundups of
items to enhance home
décor; our reporting on
the arts and media will be more
extensive. We’ve also added a column
called “Neighbors” that highlights
uplifting efforts of community
members. The final page still takes a
nostalgic look back at our community,
but the photos now come courtesy
the vast archives we share with our
sister publication, The Record, and
Northjersey.com.
All of this is well and good – who
couldn’t use a makeover every few
years? But our editorial objectives
remain the same: To report on the
fascinating people, places and events
in the greater Montclair area. To this
end, in “A Practice of Promoting
Health,” we talk to Dr. Richard
Besser, who recently left his job as
chief health and medical editor at
ABC News to become president and
CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation. We share insights from
social workers and education experts
on “Raising Learners in the Age of
Social Media.” Cedar Grove native
David Njoku shares his excitement
of being drafted by the Cleveland
Browns football team. And in our
first “Neighbors” column, local
retiree Marilyn Graham speaks about
tutoring elementary school-age kids,
and what she learns from them, too.

we’re all for it! Share what’s new with
you at [email protected]. n
