Inspired at a young age by a book on rewarding professions as well as by his mother a dental hygienist, Dr. Szumita believes excellence in health care means a total commitment to comfort and compassion for each patient. During dental school at Case Western Reserve University School of Dentistry, Dr. Szumita worked part-time as a phlebotomist at the adjoining hospital. There he discovered a passion for surgery and then completed a general practice residency at the VA Medical Center in Cleveland followed by a four year residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the VA Medical Center in East Orange and St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in NJ. A graduate of Stonybrook School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Hartnett completed a dental residency at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in New York. She continued her periodontics specialty training at the University of Tennessee School of Dentistry and the Memphis Veterans Administration Hospital. She is on the attending staff at Hackensack UMC Mountainside and has been teaching dental residents there since 1995.
