GEORGE PAPASIKOS, A PERIODONTIST BASED IN MONTCLAIR, FOCUSES ON preventive treatment, implants and gum recession. In doing so, he pays attention not only to the health of the patient, but also to the aesthetics of their smile. “We place many dental implants to replace teeth,” Dr. Papasikos says, “and perform many different types of gum grafting procedures. Gum grafting rebuilds lost gum tissue in patients who have recession.” Dr. Papasikos is a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson Dental School, and completed a postgraduate residency in Periodontics at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). In addition, Dr. Papasikos has served as Chief of Periodontics, Prosthodontics and Endodontics at Mountainside Hospital. He is also an instructor at the dental residency programs at Morristown Memorial Hospital, and Mountainside Hospital, and is a past Clinical Instructor at UMDNJ School of Dentistry. Dr. Papasikos is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, American Dental Association, American Academy of Osseointegration, Northeastern Society of Periodontists, New Jersey Dental Association, New Jersey Society of Periodontists, West Essex Dental Association, and Associated Physicians of Montclair. Dr. Papasikos makes a point of staying at the forefront of dental technology. “We perform minimally invasive type treatments,” he says. “For periodontal care we will use lasers utilizing the Lanap Protocol, which is relatively new, but very much an alternative method of treating 80 MONTCLAIR MAGAZINE BACK TO SCHOOL 2016 some periodontal problems. Using a laser, there’s no incision,” he explains. “It’s a specific wavelength that is used to destroy bacteria and to cut tissue, but it’s specific for this particular problem. We’re able to go under the gum, destroy bad bacteria, remove diseased tissue, and let the body try to heal and reattach the gum back to the tooth. So rather than trimming it away, the body repairs it. “There’s minimal discomfort after,” he says. “People go to work the next day, because there are no incisions, no sutures, no swelling. But the main issue is that gum line doesn’t really change very much.” At his Park Street location in Montclair, Papasikos’ son and daughter, orthodontists Drs. Jacy and Arianna Papasikos, share this location in Montclair, which enables patients to benefit from a wide range of dental services. “With orthodontists in the office,” he says, “we can provide treatment options not available elsewhere. It really makes for a significant improvement in patients’ appearance and health. “In dentistry we try to prevent and treat disease,” he says. “It’s an art form to help create aesthetic smiles. There is a strong association between periodontal disease and other health problems, such as heart disease, cancer and stroke. “Being a periodontist is a wonderful profession, as we are able to help patients improve their oral health as well as systemic health. It’s an incredibly wonderful experience to see the body heal.” SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION
