Keep a 30-day list.
If you have an impulse to buy something you don’t absolutely need, put it on a 30-day list. You can buy necessities — everything else goes on the list, with the date that it’s added to the list. When the 30 days are up, you can buy it. Most likely by that time the strong impulse you initially felt is gone. This habit will help you budget for needs and plan for wants.
Cook at home.
I know, it seems more difficult than eating out. But it doesn’t have to be hard. Throw together a quick stir-fry with frozen veggies and either boneless chicken or tofu (my favorite) with soy sauce or tamari. Make a home-made pizza with a ready-made crust, some sauce, cheese and veggies. With a little effort you will find yourself saving money and eating healthier.
Write a list before you go shopping – and stick to it.
One of the easiest ways to save money is to only shop from a list. Another good idea is to eat before you go to the grocery store. Not only will the list help you stay on track, not feeling hungry will help avoid impulse food purchases like snacks.
Drink more water.
Not only does drinking plenty of water have great health benefits — it has financial benefits, too. Drink a big glass of water before each meal will help you feel fuller and ultimately eat less. Most importantly during these hot summer months when unrelenting heat, you will stay properly hydrated. Even better, using a refillable bottle helps the planet. Remember: Most buildings on campus have filtered water fountains or refillable bottle stations.
Share your financial dreams with people you love.
This seems like an odd way to save money, but think about it. If you share your financial dreams with those you love, you will have created your own personal money team. They will help you achieve your dreams. Set a big, goal together like encouraging each other to save $500 by next May. Working together you help each other stop stressing over bills, past due balances will be paid off, or your savings account grows!
