Day trips can be a great experience for those that want to travel, but are on a budget. Here are several day trip destinations with a short drive from Denton!

1. Athens, TX 2 hours from Denton

Athens offers small town hospitality and opportunities to explore the outdoors. The town is pedestrian friendly and easy to explore on foot. The downtown features many interesting shops and galleries. The weekend farmer’s market features local produce and homemade products. The town hosts a variety of events and festivals throughout the year. One of the most popular of Athens attractions is the Athens Scuba Park, which allows visitors the unique opportunity to scuba dive in the town’s clear water lake.

3. Turner Falls State Park, OK 90-minutes from Denton

Home to the largest waterfall in Oklahoma, Turner Falls State Park is a quick and easy drive to escape campus and enjoy the outdoors. Hiking trails lead visitors past interesting caves, along streams, and through the Arbuckle Mountains. Wildlife sightings are common. There are several natural swimming areas, sandy beaches with bath houses, and picnic areas. The park features several concession stands. If a day trip isn’t long enough, the park offers campsites as well as cabin rentals and screened-in shelters.

4. Lake Texoma, Tx 90-minutes from Denton

Lake Texoma is a large reservoir north of Denton, with well developed recreation facilities. There are two state parks and fifty-four other parks surrounding the lake. Twelve marinas provide water access and services. Camping opportunities abound at the lake’s many campgrounds. In addition to the activities happening on the water, the area surrounding the lake has miles of trails for horseback riding, hiking, biking, and more.
