3 . THE CAPSTONE UNIT
BEW 3001 ( Ethics and Sustainability in a Business Environment ) is a capstone unit and a Principles of Responsible Management Education ( PRME ) initiative that was developed for the Bachelor in Business and Commerce Degree offered by the School of Business at Monash University Malaysia in 2020 .
PRME is an initiative of the United Nations and business schools from around the world . It aims to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by transforming management education and developing the responsible leaders of the future . The School of Business at Monash University Malaysia is a signatory of PRME and is committed to implementing the six principles of PRME : purpose , values , method , research , partnership , and dialogue .
A capstone unit is a final-year unit that serves as the culminating and integrative experience of an educational program . It ’ s designed to encourage students to think critically , solve challenging problems , and develop skills such as oral communication , public speaking , research skills , media literacy , teamwork – skills that help prepare them for the working world , and life in general .
BEW 3001 focuses on ethical issues that arise in business entities , which involve the 17 United Nations ’ Sustainable Development Goals ( UN SDGs ) relating to human rights , environmental protection , health and wellness , corporate governance , whistleblowing , human resource management and CSR reporting . It examines fundamental questions relating to the issues above by applying sustainability and ethical theories , legislative , regulatory and the UN SDG framework .
The unit was designed to address the employability skills gap in final year students through solving real-life problems linked to UN SDGs , with the purpose of delivering responsible business leaders for the future . It ’ s objective is to raise students ’ knowledge and awareness of the importance of sustainability and the UN SDGs in a business environment ; to promote higherorder thinking skills in a virtual environment through innovative teaching & learning strategies for the UN SDGs and equip students for the next stages of their careers with the knowledge , ethics , tools and skills to develop a well-rounded understanding of how global challenges need to be addressed in the business context . The unit was delivered solely on a virtual platform due to the Covid-19 pandemic .
